How to write a tutoring progress update for parents
A clear parent update connects the lesson to the learner’s progress and the next teaching step. Here is a repeatable structure for tutors who share updates through WhatsApp or another familiar channel.
The short answer
Write about the lesson, the learner and what happens next.
A useful tutoring progress update is specific enough to reassure a parent and brief enough to read quickly. Start with the topic covered, describe one observable strength or difficulty, and finish with the next step. Avoid a score without context and avoid vague praise that does not tell the family what changed.
Before sharing, read the message from the parent’s point of view. Make sure it describes the right learner, reflects the lesson you actually taught and does not include a conclusion you cannot support.

Describe what the learner could do, where they needed a prompt or what pattern appeared in their work.

Explain what you will revisit, practise or introduce in the next lesson.

Keep the tone warm, direct and grounded in the lesson.

- Close with the plan.“Next lesson we will practise mixed-number problems and check the same method in word problems.”

Review the message as carefully as the lesson notes.
- Use the learner’s name and the correct lesson date.
- Prefer one or two concrete observations over a long list.
- Separate what happened in the lesson from your plan for next time.
- Keep private tutor notes out of the parent-facing message.
- Share through WhatsApp only after you are happy with the wording.
